After walking around the roundabout with sculptures, I found this green area with paths and more sculptures. And more mounds.

I was suprised to find a little sprinkle of snow in Dudley – was very cold – my hand felt it!

The sculptures form the Wolverton Road part of the Millennium Sculpture Trail.

This is called Living Fossil by Natasha Carsberg.

Southern Emu-wren (Stipiturus malachurus)

Croajingolong National Park, Victoria, Australia. Male.

An elusive species at best! These guys only live in coastal heath and invariably are buried deep inside heathy shrubs – this male was inside a bush in poor light, and some distance away (so heavily cropped), but I did have a clear shot of him. He was reacting to a playback recording on my iPhone and was very interested in the "other" emu-wren in his territory, but not interested enough to come out into the sun! Just love that tail.

My cats brought this little fella into the house to chase it around. What a sight – four excited felines with their entire attention focused on what looked like a piece of shoestring on cursory glance. Except, it was wriggling and slithering for its dear life, the cats hot on its tail. I managed to capture it in the living room – the snake seemed unharmed and happily slid away into the underbrush when I released it in the backyard. Hopefully it learned a valuable lesson and will stay out of the cat enclosure in the future.

PEAK OIL: Living off the Grid, Saving the Species and One Sky

My brilliant friend Mike Simpson runs the NGO One Sky: The Canadian Institute for Sustainable Living. One Sky, in short, “promotes sustainable living globally,” from Smithers BC, to Calabar, Nigeria to Sierra Leone to Peru and beyond. They stand for integration, integrity and a sharing of ideas and practical applications on the ground. Every time I spend time with Mike (and Gail) I learn a ton of actually practical things (and things metaphysical), and of course these three August days in Smithers, BC were no exception. Upon my urging, Mike gave me a ten-minute crash course in living off the grid, and more intelligently on the grid, and let me film it. I hadn’t even heard of grid-intertie systems. And lo and behold, one of the reasons, Mike says, that solar isn’t yet common place is because all of the non-renewable resources, oil, nuclear etc, are relentlessly subsidized. Subsidized? In our ‘free market’ system. What the hell? Yes, that was sarcasm. Learn what you can, do what you can. You know, love is a sustainable resource, too. May all sisters and brothers live a little better, a little more sustainably, with a little more justice. Pete See www.onesky.ca See also Gail Hochachka’s www.drishti.ca www.petemccormack.com
