Southern Emu-wren (Stipiturus malachurus)

Croajingolong National Park, Victoria, Australia. Male.

An elusive species at best! These guys only live in coastal heath and invariably are buried deep inside heathy shrubs – this male was inside a bush in poor light, and some distance away (so heavily cropped), but I did have a clear shot of him. He was reacting to a playback recording on my iPhone and was very interested in the "other" emu-wren in his territory, but not interested enough to come out into the sun! Just love that tail.

My cats brought this little fella into the house to chase it around. What a sight – four excited felines with their entire attention focused on what looked like a piece of shoestring on cursory glance. Except, it was wriggling and slithering for its dear life, the cats hot on its tail. I managed to capture it in the living room – the snake seemed unharmed and happily slid away into the underbrush when I released it in the backyard. Hopefully it learned a valuable lesson and will stay out of the cat enclosure in the future.

From Wikipedia:
Quercus virginiana, also known as the southern live oak, is a normally evergreen oak tree native to the southeastern United States. Though many other species are loosely called live oak, the southern live oak is particularly iconic of the Old South.

Spanish moss (Tillandsia usneoides) is a flowering plant that grows upon larger trees, commonly the Southern Live Oak or Bald Cypress in the southeastern United States. It closely resembles its namesake (Usnea, or beard lichen), but in fact it is not biologically related to either mosses or lichens. Instead, it is an angiosperm in the family Bromeliaceae (the bromeliads) that grows hanging from tree branches in full sun or partial shade.

It ranges from the southeastern United States (as far north as southern Virginia and eastern Maryland) to Argentina, growing wherever the climate is warm enough and has a relatively high average humidity. It propagates both by seed and vegetatively by fragments that blow on the wind and stick to tree limbs, or are carried by birds as nesting material.

PEAK OIL: Living off the Grid, Saving the Species and One Sky

My brilliant friend Mike Simpson runs the NGO One Sky: The Canadian Institute for Sustainable Living. One Sky, in short, “promotes sustainable living globally,” from Smithers BC, to Calabar, Nigeria to Sierra Leone to Peru and beyond. They stand for integration, integrity and a sharing of ideas and practical applications on the ground. Every time I spend time with Mike (and Gail) I learn a ton of actually practical things (and things metaphysical), and of course these three August days in Smithers, BC were no exception. Upon my urging, Mike gave me a ten-minute crash course in living off the grid, and more intelligently on the grid, and let me film it. I hadn’t even heard of grid-intertie systems. And lo and behold, one of the reasons, Mike says, that solar isn’t yet common place is because all of the non-renewable resources, oil, nuclear etc, are relentlessly subsidized. Subsidized? In our ‘free market’ system. What the hell? Yes, that was sarcasm. Learn what you can, do what you can. You know, love is a sustainable resource, too. May all sisters and brothers live a little better, a little more sustainably, with a little more justice. Pete See www.onesky.ca See also Gail Hochachka’s www.drishti.ca www.petemccormack.com

BYOD – An American Treasure and Living Legend Les Blank and his Documentary Films

BYOD - An American Treasure and Living Legend Les Blank and his Documentary Films

EPISODE SYNOPSIS: One of the great living documentary makers of the modern day, Les Blank joins BYOD. After fifty years making incredible docs that showcase the human spirit through art, struggle and humor, Les Blank has a wealth of knowledge to share with Ondi and Vlad. Mr. Blank takes us through his early days and his decision to pick up the camera, his jump to film making and dealing with subjects on the outside of society, to dealing with artists to find the human spirit. He spares few details along the way and let’s us in on his life-threatening filming Herzog, from the jungle of South America on “Burden of Dreams,” to filming the director famously eating his own shoe. Mr. Blank is still a brilliant artist and illuminating guide through the history of doc making. GUEST BIO: Les Blank is a prize-winning independent filmmaker, who the New York Times have famously called, “a master of movies about the American idiom… one of our most original filmmakers.” In 1967, after two years in the Ph.D. film program at the University of Southern California, and five years of freelancing in Los Angeles, he began his first independent films, on Texas blues singer Lightnin’ Hopkins (The Blues Accordin’ to Lightnin’ Hopkins) and the newly forming sub-culture known as flower children, (God Respects Us When We Work, But Loves Us When We Dance). Blank’s films are marked by series of intimate glimpses into the lives and music of passionate people who live at the periphery of society
