Billie Holiday Strange Fruit from Bitter Fruit Southern trees bear strange fruit Blood on the leaves Blood at the root Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees Pastoral scene of the gallant south The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth The scent of magnolia sweet and fresh Then the sudden smell of burning flesh Here is a fruit for the crows to pluck for the rain to gather for the wind to suck for the sun to rot for the tree to drop Here is a strange and bitter crop Composed by Abel Meeropol (aka Lewis Allan)

old songs are for old people ^_^ young people are for old and new songs … ^_^ those people who don’t like the present mode of music are so called oldies…. ^_^ Remember those times you were young if its still a cycle of issues… ^_^

I heartily dedicate this beautiful song to Mylene Valenzona who is now in heaven! I missed you so much and rest in peace my friend!
i remember this song back then when i was a kid. i was about to sleep when my older sister played this for some soundtrippin’ that night. i fell inlove and drifted to a slumber after this. gotta love the 90’s =)

How relating.

U don’t understand a shit about us black dudes, moron!
I agree!
Haunting song…
Hearing this made me feel sick
You are crazy.
lol you’re retarded if you don’t get it….
It really disgusts me that these lil immature and ignorant kids r saying. This song is about what black ppl were goin through. I bet u wouldn’t have survived. Keep ur comments to yourself. This is a powerful song sung by one of the most absolutely stunning woman of our time.
asshole 😛
I’ll be the first to say it: KKK.
Whitey
She has such soul in this song, such a heavy heart.
such a great song
The man that wrote this wasn’t a musician. He approched Billie directly to sing it. It protests the KKK lynching black americans in the south. It’s one of the first protests songs in american history. Recording it took guts. Please show Mrs. Holiday some respect.
And furthermore… if you don’t like the country… MOVE THE FUCK OUT!!!! There are non-stop flights to France and China… take your pick. But my husbands brother did not have to be blown into pieces on a peace mission, delivering soccer balls to Afgan kids so you could sit on youtube and stand on a soap box like you’ve actually done a dam thing to make differance!! OOhh REALLY you VOTED, well lets give you a round of applause!! Get over yourself. You suck at life.
so what if we use music to voice a wrong? Would it make it any more immoral if she had used 80,000 mandarian characters (btw that’s what the “chinese” speak). It’s MUSIC and the writer and performer can do what they will with the lyrics! That is what makes it art.
yeah we all got that… thank you captain obvious..
Sure, and Sinatra didn’t write “The house we live in”!
she didn’t write it dumbass.
yep, this is a really good song
billie singing is amazing, but the lyrics is not hers
a teacher wrote this poem during the apartheid, and sent to billie holiday, so we have this song now (:
regards!
All im sayi’n is that she was high trippi’n writing it. Still greate stuff!
if you cant pluck a reasonable understanding out of things, dont go out shaming yourself like that, saying such thing as this lyrics have no meaning
you can have all the references you may need to clearify things, like wikipedia, or any google search itself
anywho, this song is not so encoded in itself lyrics, even you could have understood it
I heard this song in my music class, this song is so clear that I could picture the bodies on the tree. I could feel the fear, and sorrow and disgust in her voice, and I could almost smell the burning bodies. I can’t believe that my grandparents had to go through this.
I’ve always heard about the song, but never really knew the lyrics until now…. Preparing for Black History Month.
WOW! Beautiful
However, I can understand how someone who is not African-American wouldn’t get it… But it’s simply a song for the poetic or the historian, knowing the time this was written. BUT, (lol) the OBVIOUS lyrics say “strange fruit” . This alone says not regular which should cause u to wonder what?… Blood on the leaves…. Animals or people: people. Blood at the root..
Her certain style of singing and lyrics really inspire me to compose music.
