An Appalachian favorite. In first quarter of ’81, at height of popularity, this song was played on the radio and jukebox evey 15 minutes. In Binghamton, and way further down I-81, everyone dug this song.

I remember this song when it first came out. Not a good time in my life but this song is a good memory. Always made me happy hearing it. Ronnie Milsap is just an awesome musician.

i love gatlinburg-and all of the great smokey mountains. most visited national park in the us. but the thing that strikes me the most is the hitching from la to knoxville. when i was young–my friends used to skip school and hitch out to the beach all of the time. we never had any trouble–just met some cool people. tell me your hitch hiking story.

What ever happened to songs like this? Nowadays music is soooo bad, with all the pop and stupid lyrics. What ever happened to the days of artists that are classy gentlemen, singing songs that really tell a story? It’s a shame that our short attention spans can’t appreciate these songs anymore.

Early 80’s, I was a young girl. My dad was truck-pulling back then. Sometimes we’d get up at 4 am to hit the road. By the time I woke up, we had crossed several states. This song was on a lot back then. The memories it brings up now just tug at my heart. We live a pretty sedate life these days. I wish my boys could experience that era. Can’t recreate it, but I’ll never really let it go. A part of me is still out there in the smokey mountain rain.
