Ok Tim didn’t get LSU confused with Bama! He’s an LSU fan. The guys that wrote the song said they wanted to use the most iconic southern figures and places for the song. So Tim is singing about the Crimson Tide and Bear Bryant and Scarlett O Hara. He likes LSU though so that is probably why he held up the T-Shirt and did the crossed fingers to let his LSU people know that he was still a fan. There. Schooled ya! 😉
I’m a yankee and this song makes me wish I still had my pickup truck! Good music is good music regardless of geographic location! With that said you Southerners definitly show better hospitality hands down…….and thumbs up to ya for that!
I was 16, it was 1986, my first car, my first tape player, this was the album I had. I was, am, from the south. This album, this song, helps me define who I am.
This was done as a tribute to Dub Thomas where Mud Crutch got their start in his club in Gainesville, Florida. When Dub passed away Tom came home to sing for him ..I knew Dub and he was a great man and believed that Tom would be the star he is ….
Petty: “That may be my favorite among my songs – just in terms of a piece of pure writing. I remember writing it very vividly. It was in the middle of the night and I was playing it on the piano at home in Encino. I was just singing into my cassette recorder and suddenly these words came out. I was at the point in my career where I was very much trying to find some new ground….so no, not a cover..
A relative in his mid 40’s recently died and this was played at his funeral I have to admit that I had never this song previously but it has a haunting air to it.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers have been part of the soundtrack to my life for 30 years. Now, they speak to my children. That’s classic.
So happy after all the years and all the travels, I never lost my Southern Accent!
Such a beautiful song. The guy really knows how to bring emotions out.
This describes where I come from perfectly.
